Google Regrets Suicide Prevention Week Themed Logo

February 2, 2008

According to a top Google executive who wished to remain unnamed, in retrospect Google probably shouldn't have featured a themed logo for Suicide Prevention Week.

The logo in question featured razor blades, two nooses in the place of the O's in Google, and a spilled bottle of sleeping pills, all common methods for committing suicide.

Google's themed logos, or Google Doodles as they are called, started in 1999 with a logo that referenced the Burning Man festival. Since then, Google Doodles have been created for most holidays, the birthdays of several artists and scientists, and various different events ranging from Bastille Day to the 50th anniversary of the Lego brick.

Suicide Prevention Week, sponsored this year by the American Institute of Suicidology, falls on the dates September 4th through September 10th. The national event is aimed at raising awareness about suicide and suicidal behaviors and to praise and encourage those working to help prevent suicide.

Said the Google executive of their misguided effort, "We were just trying to support the cause and help raise awareness, but instead, now everyone just thinks we're a bunch of dicks."
